Benne biscuit or butter biscuit recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit. Benne biscuit or butter biscuits are prepared using wheat flour, sugar and ghee. This wheat biscuits can also be prepared using oil.

This is a pan or kadai baked benne biscuit or butter biscuit recipe. Here I have used a thick bottomed pan, a stand and a lid to bake the biscuits. However you can use microwave or conventional oven to bake these wheat or atta biscuits. Bake the biscuits at 200w for 2 to 3 minutes, if using microwave oven. And bake the biscuits at 180deg for 10 - 12 minutes, if using conventional oven.

Benne biscuits are very popular in Karnataka. We used to enjoy these biscuits from Iyengar bakery during our school days. "Benne" translates to butter in Kannada language. But these biscuits (or cookies) are generally prepared using ghee or oil. Benne biscuit is an old recipe in our family. My aunt introduced it in our family when I was very young. My aunt and my mom used to bake these cookies using "sand baking method". They used to heat a big sand filled frying pan, place a plate above and bake the biscuits by closing the lid. It is quite safe and those biscuits will be so yummy.

I have used "cooker-salt baking method" in my other butter biscuits recipe post. But eventually I learnt that 1 - 2 batches of biscuits can be baked without sand or salt.

Benne biscuit recipe using wheat flour

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 16 no

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup wheat flour
  2. 1/4 cup sugar
  3. 1/8 cup ghee or oil (or as required to make the dough)
  4. 1 cardamom (optional; I didn't use)

Instructions for making benne biscuit:

  1. Take the ingredients as per the measurement. You can simply grind the sugar to get sugar powder. And if adding cardamom, powder it with sugar.wheat flour, sugar and ghee for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  2. Take powdered sugar and ghee (or oil) in a bowl.sugar and ghee for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  3. Rub and mix it well using a spoon.soft dough for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  4. Add in wheat flour and continue mixing.soft dough for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  5. Knead the mixture for 1 or 2 minutes.kneading dough for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  6. Prepare a soft but stiff dough. You can add ghee or flour if required.soft dough for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  7. Take a small gooseberry sized ball and flatten it. Optionally you can make any impressions of your choice. Make sure there are no craks on the edges. Cracks means you need to add more ghee.making wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  8. I have made a simple design using the spoon.flattened wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit in oven
  9. Grease a plate or a tray with ghee or oil. I have used mini idli plate.plate or tray for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  10. Arrange the biscuits over the greased plate.biscuits on a plate for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit in cooker
  11. Take a thick bottomed pan with a stand. Preheat it for few minutes.pan with a stand for wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  12. Place the plate with biscuits.baking wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit in cooker
  13. Close the lid and bake it for 12 - 15 minutes under low flame. Time may vary depending on the size of the biscuits and the flame.baking wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
  14. Start checking after 10 minutes. Bake until you get nice aroma and the bottom has turned slightly brown. Switch off the stove. If preparing more, You can continue baking by placing another plate of biscuits.baked wheat flour benne biscuit or atta butter biscuit
