Gudanna or kayanna recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very tasty and simple recipe. Gudanna is prepared on festival days as prasada. Gudanna or kayanna or jaggery-coconut rice is much loved by Goddess Durga. Gudanna or kayanna is prepared using rice, coconut, jaggery and little ghee.

Dasara and navarathri festival is going on. If you are still looking for one simple recipe, which is loved by Goddess Durga, then this recipe is for you.

Gudanna is prepared using precooked rice..just like haalu payasa or rice kheer. I have posted many simple prasada recipes and listed under "Navaratri recipes". Kindly have a look.

Gudanna recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup rice
  2. 1.25 cup water (to cook the rice)
  3. 1/2 cup water (to prepare jaggery syrup)
  4. 1/2 cup powdered jaggery (adjust as per your taste)
  5. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  6. 1 tbsp broken cashew
  7. 1 tbsp raisins
  8. 1 tbsp ghee
  9. 2 cardamoms

Instructions for making gudanna or kayanna:

  1. Take 1/2 cup of rice in a pressure cooker and rinse it. Add in 1.25 cup of water and cook the rice until soft but not mushy.cooking rice for gudanna or kayanna
  2. In a deep frying pan heat 1 tbsp ghee and roast cashews and raisins. Once done, take it out and keep it aside.cashew and raisins for gudanna or kayanna
  3. Next in the same pan take 1/2 cup of jaggery and 1/2 cup water. Allow it to boil.water and jaggery for gudanna or kayanna
  4. Once the jaggery is dissolved, add in cooked rice. If you wish you can strain the jaggery syrup and continue.cooked rice for gudanna or kayanna
  5. Add in 1/2 cup of grated coconut and continue cooking under medium flame.grated coconut for gudanna or kayanna
  6. Once the excess water is dried, add in roasted cashews and raisins. Also add in cardamom powder.roasted cashews and raisins for gudanna or kayanna
  7. Stir and cook well until gudanna becomes thick.making gudanna or kayanna
