Shallot gravy or small onion gojju recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Small onion or eerulli gojju is a very simple and tasty gravy recipe. Shallot gravy or small onion gojju tastes good with either rice or dose or idli. Small onion or eerulli gojju is prepared using peeled shallots, coconut, red chili and coriander seeds.

This eerulli gojju is a simple and tasty recipe. You can prepare this gravy or gojju in 10 minutes. I learnt this from a facebook group.

Shallots are small onions familiar by different names like sambar onion, pearl onion, ulli, vengaya etc., I use these onions in Bangalore hotel style idli sambar too.

Small onion gojju recipe

Preparation time: 3 hours
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup peeled shallots or small onions
  2. 1 tbsp oil
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard
  4. Few curry leaves
  5. Small lemon sized tamarind
  6. 2 tsp salt
  7. 2 tsp jaggery (optional)

Ingredients for grinding: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 red chillies
  2. 1 tsp coriander seeds
  3. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  4. 1 tsp oil

Instructions for making small onion or eerulli gojju:

  1. Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan. Roast red chillies and coriander seeds.red chillies and coriander seeds for small onion or eerulli gojju
  2. Transfer the roasted ingredients into a mixie jar. Add in 1/2 cup of coconut. Grind it into a fine paste by adding required water. Keep it aside.grinding masala for small onion or eerulli gojju
  3. Next in the same pan, heat 1 tbsp oil. Add in mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds splutter, add in curry leaves.mustard seeds and curry leaves for small onion or eerulli gojju
  4. Followed by add in peeled small onions.peeled shallots for small onion or eerulli gojju
  5. Stir often, close the lid and cook the small onions for 2 minutes.cooking onions for small onion or eerulli gojju
  6. Add in tamarind juice.tamarind for small onion or eerulli gojju
  7. Also add in salt.salt for small onion or eerulli gojju
  8. Close the lid and cook the onions for few minutes. Add in required water.cooking shallots for small onion or eerulli gojju
  9. Once cooked add in ground masala and required water. Give a quick mix.masala for small onion or eerulli gojju
  10. Add in jaggery (optional). Also adjust salt and sour level.jaggery for small onion or eerulli gojju
  11. Bring it to boil. Switch off the stove and serve it with dose or idli or rice.boiling small onion or eerulli gojju
