Mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice is very tasty one pot meal recipe. This is Karnataka style authentic mavinakayi chitranna recipe. This type of chitranna or mango rice is very popular across Bangalore - Mysore region of Karnataka.

Chitranna is one easy and tasty breakfast or ricebath recipe from Karnataka. This Mango chitranna or mavinakayi chitranna is unique in taste. There are many ways to prepare mango rice. But this recipe is my favorite. I have posted authentic chitranna or lemon rice and nellikai chitranna or amla rice recipes. You can follow these recipes as well by replacing lemon or gooseberry with grated mango.

Mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (sona masoori)
  2. 1 medium sized mango or mavinakayi
  3. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 2 tbsp groundnut or peanuts
  6. 1 tsp urad dal
  7. 1 tsp chana dal or bengal gram dal
  8. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  9. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  10. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  11. 4 tbsp oil

Ingredients for roasting:

  1. 2 - 4 red chili
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1 tsp fenugreek or methi seeds
  4. 5 - 6 curry leaves

Instructions for making mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice:

  1. Cook the rice and keep it aside. Rice should be cooked well but not mushy.
  2. Wash, peel and grate the mango. Taste the mango and use it accordingly. I used only half mango.grated mango for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  3. Now to begin with let us roast the ingredients listed under "for roasting". Take red chili, mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds in a pan and dry roast it.spices for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  4. Roast under medium flame until mustard seeds starts spluttering. Add in curry leaves, roast for few seconds and switch off the stove.spices for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  5. Transfer the roasted ingredients into a mixie jar and grind it into a fine powder.grinding spices for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  6. Add in grated mango, grated coconut and grind it again.grated mango and coconut for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  7. If required, add in very little water while grinding. I didn't add any water. Masala is ready keep it aside.masala for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  8. Next let us prepare tempering for the mavinakayi chitranna. Take 4 tbsp of oil in a large frying pan and heat it under medium flame. At first add in ground nuts and fry until they start crackling.ground nut for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  9. When the groundnuts crackles, add in mustard seeds, gram dal and urad dal. Fry until mustard seed splutters. tempering for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  10. Next add in curry leaves, ground masala and turmeric powder. Saute for a while and switch off the stove.ground masala and turmeric powder for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
  11. Add in the cooked rice and salt. Mix well using a flat spatula, serve and enjoy.adding rice for mavinakayi chitranna or mango rice
