Gorikayi rice bath recipe explained with step by step pictures. Gorikayi rice bath is a tasty breakfast recipe from Karnataka. This gorikayi rice bath or cluster beans rice is prepared using vangi bath powder. I have explained the vangi bath powder recipe in my earlier post. Preparing tasty gorikayi rice bath is very easy if you have vangi bath powder.

Gorikayi is familiar by different names like Guar, Gawar, Kothavarangai and Goru Chikkudu. This gorikayi rice bath or cluster beans rice or chavalikayi rice bath is very popular in Mysore region of Karnataka. This recipe is from my friend, who lives in Mysore. She has also shared one gorikayi kara or chutney recipe with me. I didn't know that preparing rice bath using cluster beans and vangi bath powder (palyada pudi) will be so tasty. One day I tried, and believe me it is more tastier than Vangi bath. So please try this rice bath recipe. I am sure you will love this.

Gorikayi rice bath recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 handful tender cluster beans or gorikayi
  2. 1 cup sona masuri or any high quality rice
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 2 tsp gram dal or chana dal
  5. 2 tsp urad dal
  6. 5 - 6 cashews or 2 tbsp ground nuts
  7. 2 tbsp fresh green peas (optional)
  8. 1/2 capsicum chopped (optional)
  9. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  10. 1 gooseberry sized tamarind
  11. 3 - 4 tsp vangi bath powder
  12. 2 tbsp dessicated coconut (if not added in the powder)
  13. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  14. 1 gooseberry sized jaggery
  15. Salt as per your taste
  16. 8 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making gorikayi rice bath:

  1. To prepare gorikayi rice bath, first cook the rice and set it aside.
  2. Try to use tender cluster beans for better taste.tender cluster beans for gorikayi rice bath
  3. Wash, discard the ends and cut the cluster beans into 1 " pieces.cut cluster beans for gorikayi rice bath
  4. Take a oil in a frying pan and heat it. Add in mustard seeds, gram dal, urad dal and cashews.tempering for gorikayi rice bath
  5. Fry until mustard seed splutters and dals turn brown in colour. But do not burn them. Add in curry leaves and reduce the flame.tempering for gorikayi rice bath
  6. Add in fresh green peas and chopped capsicum. Fry for a minute. Please note these two are optional ingredients.capsicum and green peas for gorikayi rice bath
  7. Add in cluster beans pieces. Fry the cluster beans for 1 minute under high flame.cluster beans for gorikayi rice bath
  8. Add in turmeric powder and fry for 2 more minutes under medium flame.turmeric powder for gorikayi rice bath
  9. Add in salt and jaggery.salt and jaggery for gorikayi rice bath
  10. Add in tamarind juice extracted from one gooseberry sized tamarind. Add in little water.tamarind for gorikayi rice bath
  11. Cover and cook the cluster beans until soft under low flame.cook brinjals for gorikayi rice bath
  12. Now add in 3 - 4 tsp of vangi bath powder. I have added coconut in the vangi bath powder itself. If coconut is not added in the vangi bath powder, then add it now.gorikayi rice bath powder for gorikayi rice bath
  13. Fry for 2 more minutes and switch off the stove.vangi bath powder for gorikayi rice bath
  14. Add in cooked rice.rice for gorikayi rice bath
  15. Mix well using a flat spatula. Serve it with raita or curd rice.mix and serve gorikayi rice bath
