Menthe huli or Fenugreek seeds sambar

Menthe huli or Fenugreek seeds sambar recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a simple sambar recipe with very minimum ingredients. Menthe huli or Fenugreek seeds sambar requires no dal and no vegetable yet very tasty and goes very well with rice.

Menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar recipe

Preparation time: 0 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 tsp menthe / menthya / methi seeds / fenugreek seeds
  2. 4 - 6 red chilli
  3. 1 tsp coriander seeds
  4. 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  6. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  7. 1 gooseberry sized tamarind
  8. 2 lemon sized jaggery
  9. 1 tsp cooking oil
  10. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida
  5. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making Menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar:

  1. Take a large frying pan and heat it. Add in red chilli, coriander seeds, cumin seeds and mustard seeds.spices for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  2. Fry them under medium flame and set it aside.frying spices for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  3. To the same frying pan add in the menthe or methi seeds or fenugreek seeds.methi or fenugreek seeds for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  4. Fry until golden brown and reduce the flame.methi or fry fenugreek seeds for menthe huli or sambar
  5. Now carefully add 1 cup of water.water for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  6. Bring it to boil.boil water for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  7. Close the lid and allow it to cook for 10 minutes under medium flame.cooking fenugreek seeds for menthe huli or sambar
  8. Meanwhile transfer the grated coconut and fried spices (red chilli, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and mustard seeds) to a mixie jar or a blender.grinding for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  9. Grind until smooth using required water.grinding for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  10. Now add this ground paste and jaggery to the cooked menthe or methi or fenugreek seeds.masala and jaggery for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  11. Add in tamarind juice extracted from a gooseberry sized tamarind.tamarind for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  12. Add in salt.salt for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  13. Add in around 2 cups of water and bring it to rolling boil.water for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
  14. Temper it with oil, mustard seeds, red chilli and curry leaves. Serve it with hot rice and enjoy!!tempering for menthe huli or fenugreek seeds sambar
