Majjige saaru or instant buttermilk rasam recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is an instant version of majjige saaru and it can be prepared in just 5 minutes. Majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam is prepared using buttermilk, ginger, garlic, onion, green chilli, red chilli, mustard, cumin and few other commonly availble ingredients. Majjige saaru or rasam is very tasty, healthy and goes very well with rice.

Instant rasam recipes are very useful for working mothers and bachelors. This is a perfect recipe when someone is sick and lost appetite. You can find many instant rasam recipes on this website. Majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam

Preparation time: 3 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 curd
  2. 1 cup water
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1/2 tsp gram dal
  6. 1/2 tsp urad dal
  7. 1 - 2 red chillies
  8. 1 - 2 green chillies
  9. 4 - 5 crushed garlic pods
  10. 1 onion
  11. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  12. 1/2 tsp chopped ginger
  13. A big pinch of turmeric
  14. A big pinch of asafoetida
  15. 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  16. 1.5 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  17. 1 tbsp cooking oil

Instructions for making majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam:

  1. Chop the onion, crush the garlic, slit green chillies, chop the coriander leaves, chop the ginger and keep all other things ready.ingredients for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  2. Take curd and salt in a bowl and whisk it.curd for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  3. Add another cup of water and keep it aside. Please note, you can adjust the quantity of water as per your wish.buttermilk for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan. Add in cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Wait until mustard seeds splutter.tempering for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  5. Followed by add in gram dal, urad dal and broken red chillies. Give a quick stir.tempering for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  6. Next add in crushed garlic, curry leaves and slit green chillies.garlic and green chilli for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  7. Also add in chopped onion. I have sliced the onion. You can finely chop them, if you like it that way.onion for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  8. Add in finely chopped ginger. Fry onion until soft and translucent.ginger for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  9. Next add in turmeric powder and asafoetida. Fry the onion until soft. You can add little oil or water if required.turmeric and asafoetida for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  10. At the end add in chopped coriander leaves. Give a quick stir and switch off the stove.coriander leaves for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  11. Wait until roasted ingredients are warm or until excess heat is reduced.roasted ingredients majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  12. Pour the buttermilk from step 2.buttermilk for majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
  13. Give a quick mix and serve it with hot rice.majjige saaru or buttermilk rasam
