Unique sweet and sour taste, healthy and one of the simplest rasams recipe using using doddapathre or Indian borage leaves. Doddapathre rasam or saaru is a gravy prepared using doddapathre leaves, tomato, tamarind and fresh spices. This is a simple rasam recipe from doddapathre leaves with no dal, no coconut and no rasam powders. Tastes very good with rice or idli. You can also reduce the water and serve it with chapathi.

Doddapathre rasam or saaru

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 120ml)

  1. 15-20 doddapathre leaves / Indian borage leaves
  2. 2 medium sized tomato
  3. 1/2 lemon sized tamarind
  4. 1/2 lemon sized jaggery
  5. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  6. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  7. 1 red chili
  8. 1/2 tsp crushed pepper corns
  9. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  10. 1 green chili
  11. 4-5 curry leaves
  12. 2 tsp cooking oil / ghee
  13. Salt as per your taste.

Instructions for making doddapathre rasam or saaru

  1. Wash and cut doddapathre leaves and tomato. Heat a frying pan, add oil, broken red chili, mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When the mustard seed splutters add slit green chilly and curry leaves. Followed by add crushed pepper corns and turmeric powder. Saute it for few seconds.wash and cut doddapatre leaves for doddapatre rasam
  2. Add chopped tomato and fry till the tomatoes become soft. Followed by add finely chopped doddapathre leaves and fry till the leaves become soft.fry tomato and doddapatre leaves for doddapatre rasam
  3. Add salt, tamarind extract, jaggery and water. Bring it to roling boil. Serve it with hot rice. By using less water, you can prepare curry and serve it with chapathi. tamarind and jaggery for doddapatre rasam
