Pumpkin chutney or sihi kumbalakai chutney recipe explained with step by step pictures. This pumpkin or cheenikai chutney is prepared using cooked pumpkin, coconut, red chili, sesame seeds and roasted gram. Serve this tasty and healthy chutney with either rice or dosa.

But if you don't like the roasted gram taste then you can use gram dal or chana dal. In that case roast the gram dal along with red chili and sesame seeds.

Pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/4 kg pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai
  2. 2 - 4 red chilies
  3. 1 tsp ellu or sesame seeds or til
  4. 2 tbsp roasted gram or gram dal
  5. small marble sized tamarind
  6. 1/2 tsp jaggery
  7. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  8. Salt as per your taste.

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  2. 1/2 tsp urad dal
  3. few curry leaves
  4. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney:

  1. Wash, peel and chop the pumpkin.chopped pumpkin for pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney
  2. Transfer it into a cooker. Add in salt, jaggery, tamarind and little water. Cook until pumpkin is soft. I cookd by making 1 whistle.fry chilli and sesame seeds for pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney
  3. Meanwhile in a frying pan dry roast red chilies and sesame seeds. If you are using gram dal (kadlebele) then roast that as well. I used roasted gram (hurigadale).garlic for pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney
  4. Wait until cooked pumpkin is cool and then grind it along with coconut, fried ingredients and roasted gram (if not using gram dal)fry leaves for pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney
  5. Transfer it into a bowl. Temper it with oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and urad dal. Serve it with rice or dosa.tempering the pumpkin or sihi kumbalakai chutney
