Are you bored with regular idlis? Then try this pumpkin sweet idli. Pumpkin sweet idlis are prepared using pumpkin and idli rava (rice rava). The pumpkin sweet idlis are instant idlis as no fermentation is required. Grated pumpkin, jaggery, coconut and idli rava are mixed well and steamed like any other idlies. This pumpkin sweet idli is age-old recipe and the original recipe calls for home made rice rava. But now the job is easy because we have everything readily available at shops. This pumpkin sweet idlis are prepared during first day of deepavali or diwali festival (on naraka chathurdashi) in Kundapura and Malnad region of Karnataka.

Pumpkin sweet idli is a kids friendly recipe, most of the kids who make a fuss to consume vegetables will love this. This is an easy way to feed your kids with something good and healthy. Serve these pumpkin idlies hot with ghee. Generally you do not need any side dish for pumpkin sweet idlis, so the whole cooking becomes much more simple. I have posted couple of idli recipes using idli rava like regular idli (soft idli using idli rava) and spicy cucumber idli recipes.

Whenever I prepare pumpkin sweet idli for breakfast, I will prepare cucumber idli also, which is not sweet. And this sweet and spicy combination is a super hit at my home. Pumpkin sweet idli recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 120ml)

  1. 2 cups grated pumpkin
  2. 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  3. 1 cup powdered jaggery
  4. 1 cup idli rava or rice rava
  5. 2 tsp water
  6. A pinch of cardamom powder
  7. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making Pumpkin sweet idli:

  1. Wash, peel and grate the pumpkin. Take the grated pumpkin a large bowl. Add jaggery, coconut, salt and cardamom powder. Mix well using hands. Do not add water.preparation for pumpkin sweet idli
  2. Now add rawa, 2 tsp of water and mix well using hands by pressing gently. Leave it for 10 - 15 minutes.mixing batter for pumpkin sweet idli
  3. Take the idli plates, grease it and drop the mixture. Press it gently to give the idli shape. Steam it for 15 minutes. Serve it hot with ghee or honey.cooking pumpkin sweet idli
