Heerekai bajji or bondas are very popular in Karnataka. They taste good and these are my favorite. You can also replace Ridgegourd with banana or potato or brinjal or breadfruit.

Heerekai bajji recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1.5 cup gram flour or besan
  2. 1/4 cup rice flour
  3. 1 heerekai or ridgegourd
  4. 1/2 - 1 tsp red chili powder
  5. A small pinch of baking soda
  6. A big pinch of asafoetida
  7. Water as required
  8. Oil for deep frying
  9. Salt as per your taste.

Instructions for making heerekai bajji

  1. Wash and peel the ridgegourd.ridge gourd for heerekai bajji or heerekayi bonda
  2. After peeling make thin slices.ridge gourd slices for heerekai bajji or heerekayi bonda
  3. Next to prepare batter, take gram flour, rice flour, red chili powder, baking soda and asafoetida in a bowl.flour for heerekai bajji or heerekayi bonda
  4. Add in required water and prepare a thick batter, having dosa batter consistency.batter for heerekai bajji or heerekayi bonda
  5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Dip the ridgegourd slices in the batter and deep fry them. Serve it hot with tea or coffee.making heerekai bajji or heerekayi bonda
