Halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam recipe explained with step by step pictures. This is a tasty and easy rasam or saaru prepared using jackfuit seeds, coconut and spices. There is no tomato or dal in this rasam recipe. This rasam makes use of fresh ground masala. But you can also use rasam powder. And in that case grind rasam powder with coconut and add.

I learnt this jackfruit seeds saaru or rasam recipe from my Mother. She used to prepare this often when I was a kid. We used to eat a lot of jackfruit seeds in different forms..Roasted, cooked, curried etc., Jackfruit seeds are good for health. These seeds are rich in thiamin and riboflavin which help in turning the food you eat into energy and keep your eyes, skin and hair healthy..

Halasina beejada saaru recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 15 - 20 halasina beeja or jackfruit seeds
  2. 1 small gooseberry sized tamarind
  3. 1 - 2 tsp jaggery
  4. Salt as per your taste
  5. A big pinch of turmeric powder

Ingredients for grinding (can be replaced with rasam powder):

  1. 2 - 4 red chili
  2. 2 tsp coriander seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida
  5. 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  6. 5 - 6 black pepper
  7. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  8. 1 tsp cooking oil

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chili
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. A pinch of asafoetida
  5. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  6. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making halasina beejada saaru:

  1. Slightly crush and peel the jackfruit seeds.peeling jackfruit seeds for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
  2. Rinse and cook jackfruit seeds until soft using a pressure cooker. After cooking drain the excess water and grind it into a paste using mixer grinder.cooking and grinding jackfruit seeds for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
  3. Transfer the ground paste into a container. Add in salt, tamarind juice, jaggery, turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Give a quick mix and keep it for boiling.salt, tamarind and jaggery for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
  4. Meanwhile heat a frying pan and fry red chilies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, black pepper, asafoetida and fenugreek seeds using 1 tsp of oil. Instead you can also use rasam powder.spices for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
  5. Grind roasted ingredients (or rasam powder) along with grated coconut until smooth paste.grinding coconut and spices for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam

  7. Bring it to rolling boil. Optionally you can add finely chopped coriander leaves. Switch off the stove.coriander leaves for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
  8. In a small skillet prepare tempering using 2 tsp of cooking oil, red chili, 1/2 tsp mustard, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and curry leaves. Add this tempering to the rasam or saaru.tempering for halasina beejada saaru or jackfruit seeds rasam
