Dal or bele paddu recipe explained with step by step pictures and video. Mishra belegala paddu or mixed dal appe is prepared using rice, moong dal, urad dal, toor dal, gram dal, masoor dal, beaten rice, ginger, red chilli, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, onion, curry leaves and coriander leaves. Mixed dal appa or paniyaram is a very tasty, protein rich breakfast recipe. You can serve guliyappa or paddu with plain chutney.

Here the batter is prepared using rice and different types of dals. If you don't have any one or two types of dal, then you can replace it with moong dal or urad dal. To prepare guliyappa, a different type of pan with pits is used, which is also familiar by name appe pan. "guli" translates to "pits" in Kannada language so is the name guliyappa or guliappa. This is a kids friendly recipe and a perfect recipe for the snacks or lunch box. This is a very tasty paddu or paniyaram or gundponglu recipe.

Mixed dal paddu recipe

Preparation time: 12 hours
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup raw rice
  2. 2 tbsp moong dal
  3. 2 tbsp urad dal
  4. 2 tbsp gram dal
  5. 2 tbsp toor dal
  6. 2 tbsp masoor dal
  7. 1 tsp fenugreek seeds (optional)
  8. 1/4 cup beaten rice or avalakki
  9. 2cm length ginger
  10. 2 - 4 red chillies
  11. 1 tsp coriander seeds
  12. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  13. 1 large onion finely chopped
  14. 2 tbsp finely chopped curry leaves
  15. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves (optional)
  16. Oil for cooking
  17. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making bele guliyappa or dal paddu:

  1. Take rice, moong dal, urad dal, toor dal, gram dal, masoor dal and fenugreek seeds in a container.rice and dals for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  2. Rinse well and soak it in good water for 4 - 5 hours.soaking rice and dals for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  3. Rinse and soak beaten rice or avalakki for 30 minutes. You can also replace beaten rice with 1 cup of puffed rice.soak beaten rice or poha for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  4. After soaking drain the water. Take the soaked rice and dals in mixie jar. Add in ginger, red chillies, coriander seeds and cumin seeds.soaked rice and dals for guliyappa or paddu
  5. Use required water and grind until smooth batter. Add in soaked beaten rice and grind it again.beaten rice for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  6. Pour the batter into a large containerfermenting batter for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  7. Close the lid and rest it for 7 - 8 hours for fermentation.fermenting batter for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  8. Add finely chopped onion, coriander leaves and curry leaves after fermentation. Also add in salt.onion and curry leaves for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  9. Add in required water, mix well and prepare the batter. The batter shall have dropping consistency.pan for making bele paddu or mixed dal appe or paniyaram or gundupongalu
  10. Now heat the bele paddu or mixed dal appe pan and put few drops of oil in all the pits. Pour the batter in all the pits.making bele paddu or mixed dal appe or paniyaram or gundupongalu
  11. Close the lid for 5 - 10 seconds. Allow it to cook under medium flame.close the lid and cook bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  12. Open the lid and drizzle oil on top. Flip the guliyappas or paddus and cook on the other side as well.drizzle oil for bele paddu or mixed dal appe
  13. Take them out and serve hot with coconut chutney.bele paddu or mixed dal appe on both sides
