Nellikai chutney or amla chutney recipe explained with step by step pictures. Nellikai chutney is prepared using gooseberry, coconut and fried red chilli and urad dal. Nellikai chutney is a very tasty and healthy chutney goes very well with rice.

I have explained 2 types of nellikai chutney recipes here. Both are very simple chutney recipes. The first one is with roasted urad dal like raw mango chutney. The second one is just grinding gooseberries with coconut and green chilies and then tempering it with mustard seeds and red chili.

Nellikai chutney or amla chutney recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients for type1: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 - 4 nellikai or amla or gooseberry (depending on size and your taste)
  2. 1 cup grated coconut
  3. 1 - 2 green chili
  4. 2 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp cooking oil
  6. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for type2: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 - 4 nellikai or amla or gooseberry (depending on size and your taste)
  2. 1 cup grated coconut
  3. 1 - 2 green chili
  4. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 tsp cooking oil
  2. 1 red chili
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

Instructions for making nellikai chutney - Type1:

  1. Wash and chop the gooseberries. Then transfer chopped gooseberry, salt and coconut into mixie jar. Use required water and grind until smooth.grind gooseberry and coconut for nellikai chutney or amla chutney
  2. In a small skillet fry mustard seeds, urad dal and slit green chilies using a tsp of oil (heat oil, add one by one and fry). Add this to the ground chutney and coarse grind it.roasted urad dal and green chili for nellikai chutney or amla chutney
  3. Temper it with oil, red chilli and mustard seeds.tempering nellikai chutney or amla chutney

Instructions for making nellikai chutney - Type2:

  1. Wash and chop the gooseberries. Then transfer chopped gooseberry, green chili and coconut into mixie jar.grind gooseberry and coconut for nellikai chutney or amla chutney
  2. Use required water and grind until smooth. Pour it into a bowl. Add in salt and mix well.salt for nellikai chutney or amla chutney
  3. Temper it with oil, red chilli and mustard seeds.tempering nellikai chutney or amla chutney
