Boodu kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita recipe explained with step by step pictures. Boodu kumbalakai sasive or raita is prepared using seed portion of ash gourd, curd and coconut. Ashgourd raita is a very simple recipe and is a very useful recipe.

Sasive or sasuve or sasmi is nothing but a curd+coconut based raita recipe. This raita is served as an accompaniment with rice. Generally this will be one of the sidedish in a multicourse meal. This type sasive or sasmi is in practice across Malenadu and Karavali region of Karnataka.

This boodu kumbalakai sasive or raita is a very useful recipe prepared using the seeds portion of an ashgourd. Generally everyone will discard the peel and the seeds portion. Curd or yoghurt based recipes are very common across Karavalai and Malnad region of Karnataka. So the ones with mustard and coconut gravy is familiar by name sasive or sasmi. And the cumin and coconut based gravy is familiar by name thambli.

Boodu kumbalakai sasive recipe

Preparation time: 15 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. Seeds portion of ashgourd or boodu kumbalakai thirulu
  2. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  4. 1/2 cup curd or yoghurt
  5. water as required
  6. Salt as per your taste.

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chili
  2. 2 tsp cooking oil
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

Instructions for making boodu kumbalakai sasive recipe:

  1. Cut the ash gourd and take out the middle portion. We will be using this seeds portion or thirulu in the recipe. And I have collected it from a big piece or 1/2 kg Ashgourd.ashgourd for kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
  2. Remove and discard the seeds. Take it in a container. Add in required salt and little water. Cook them until soft.pepper and cumin seeds for kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
  3. Wait until cool and transfer the cooked ashgourd pieces or kumbalakai thirulu into a mixie jar. Add in fresh grated coconut and 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds.coconut for kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
  4. Grind it into a smooth paste using required water. And then transfer it into a bowl.grinding for kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
  5. Add in required salt and whisked curd. Also add in required water. It shall have milkshake consistency. Give a quick mix.curd and salt for kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
  6. Temper it with oil, mustard seeds and red chili. Serve it with hot steaming rice.tempering kumbalakai sasive or ashgourd raita
