Hunase thokku saaru or hunasekayi thokku rasam recipe explained with step by step pictures. Hunase thokku saaru or tamarind chutney rasam is prepared using hunasekayi thokku, tomato, pepper, salt and jaggery. This is a very tasty and easy rasam recipe prepared using hunasekayi thokku.

I have explained hunase thokku or raw tamarind chutney recipe earlier. Hunasekayi thokku is prepared using raw tamarind, green chili, salt, fenugreek seeds, mustard, cumin, asafoetida and oil.

In Karnataka rasam is familiar and popular by name "saaru". This saaru or rasam is prepared using hunasekayi thokku (raw tamarind dry chutney) and tomato. This is a very easy and tasty saaru recipe. If you have thokku at home..,then you must try this saaru. I am sure you will love this.

Hunase thokku saaru or rasam recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2 litre

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  2. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  3. 5 - 6 cloves of garlic, crushed
  4. A big pinch of asafoetida
  5. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  6. 4 tsp cooking oil or ghee
  7. 1 big tomato
  8. A big pinch of turmeric powder
  9. 2 tbsp hunase thokku (refer above description)
  10. 1 gooseberry sized jaggery (or as per your taste)
  11. 1/2 tsp pepper, crushed
  12. Salt as per your taste
  13. 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves

Instructions for making hunase thokku saaru or rasam:

  1. Heat oil in a frying pan. Add in mustard seeds and cumin seeds.mustard seeds and cumin seeds for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  2. When the mustard seeds starts spluttering, add in crushed garlic, asafoetida and curry leaves. Saute until garlic turns light brown.garlic and curry leaves for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  3. Followed by add in finely chopped tomato and a big pinch of turmeric powder. Fry until tomatoes are softand mushy.tomato for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  4. Next add in 2 tbsp of hunasekayi thokku (refer the description part or click here for hunasekayi thokku recipe). Give a quick mix.hunasekayi thokku for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  5. Next add in required water.grinding coconut and spices for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  6. Add in jaggery.jaggery for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  7. Add in required salt.salt for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  8. Add in crushed pepper.pepper for hunase thokku saaru or rasam
  9. Bring it to boil. Add in finely chopped coriander leaves and switch off the stove. Serve it with hot steaming rice.boiling hunase thokku saaru or rasam
