Avalakki upkari or avalakki oggarane recipe explained with step by step pictures and video. Thelu avalakki or thin poha snacks is one very easy and tasty recipe prepared using thin beaten rice. You can serve this avalakki upkari or thin poha as a breakfast item or as evening snacks.

This avalakki upkari is very popular in Karavali (Mangalore-Udupi) region of Karnataka. In general this avalakki upkari is paired with rave uppittu or sajjige uppittu.

Avalakki upkari recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 0 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 cup thin beaten rice or avalakki or poha
  2. 2 tbsp ground nut or peanut
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp urad dal
  5. 1/2 tsp gram dal or chana dal (optional)
  6. 1 - 2 green chili
  7. 4 - 5 curry leaves
  8. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  9. 2 tsp sugar
  10. Salt as per your taste
  11. 4 tsp cooking oil
  12. 2 tbsp water or milk (optional)

Instructions for making avalakki upkari:

  1. Heat oil in a kadai or deep frying pan and roast the groundnuts or peanuts.peanut for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  2. When ground nut starts crackling add in mustard seeds, urad dal and gram dal.mustard and urad dal for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  3. When mustard seeds splutters, add in slit green chili and curry leaves. Switch off the stove and wait until warm..green chili and curry leaves for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  4. When the tempering is warm, add in salt, sugar and grated coconut.salt, sugar and coconut for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  5. Mix everything well. Generally it is squeezed and mixed using hands.mixing salt, suagr and beaten rice for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  6. Add in avalakki or beaten rice or poha.beaten rice for avalakki upkari or poha snacks
  7. Optionally sprinkle 2 tbsp of water or milk. Mix well and serve.mixing avalakki upkari or poha snacks
