Sorekai hesaru bele palya or sorekayi palya is prepared using bottle gourd, moong dal, coconut, red chili and mustard seeds. Sorekai palya or bottle gourd moong dal sabzi goes very well with rice or chapathi. It is healthy too.

Sorekai or bottle gourd is very good for health. It has been regarded as one of the healthiest vegetables. Bottle gourd cools your body, helps in weight loss, cures stomach problems and urinary infections. It keeps the heart healthy and relieves the stress.

Sorekai hesaru bele palya

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 medium sized sorekai or bottle gourd
  2. 1/4 cup moong dal or hesarubele
  3. 1 tsp urad dal
  4. 1 - 2 tbsp cooking oil
  5. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  6. 1 red chili
  7. 1 - 2 green chillies
  8. A big pinch of turmeric powder
  9. A big pinch of asafoetida
  10. 4-5 curry leaves
  11. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  12. Salt as per your taste
  13. 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves

Instructions for making sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry:

  1. Soak moong dal (hesaru bele) for 10 minutes.moong dal for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  2. Wash, peel and chop the bottle gourd. If the seeds are hard then discard them.chopped bottle gourd for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  3. Next heat oil in a frying pan. Add in 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp urad dal and 1 red chilli.tempering for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  4. Wait until mustard seeds splutter. Add in slit green chilli and curry leaves.green chilli and curry leaves for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  5. Next add in chopped bottle gourd. Give a quick mix.Chopped bottle gourd for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  6. Also add in soaked moong dal and give a quick mix.soaked moong dal for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  7. Add in turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt.turmeric, asafoetida and salt for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  8. Add 1/4 cup of water and bring it to boil.cooking sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  9. Close the lid and cook until soft.cooking sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  10. Stir in between and cook until soft under low flame. Add in grated coconut. Optionally you can add some coriander leaves.coconut for sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
  11. Give a quick mix. Switch off the stove. Serve it with hot steaming rice or chapathi.sorekai palya or bottle gourd stir fry
