Sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney recipe explained with step by step pictures. Sweet potato chutney is prepared using sweet potato, urad dal, coconut and red chili. Sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney is a very tasty chutney goes very well with dosa or idli or rice.

Sweet potato chutney recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 small sweet potato
  2. 1/2 cup grated coconut
  3. 1 - 2 red chili
  4. 2 tsp urad dal
  5. A small marble sized tamarind
  6. 1 tsp jaggery (optional)
  7. 1 tsp cooking oil
  8. A big pinch of asafoetida
  9. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 2 tsp cooking oil
  2. 1 red chili
  3. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 4 curry leaves
  5. A pinch of asafoetida

Instructions for making sweet potato chutney:

  1. Peel and clean the sweet potato. And then grate it.grated sweet potato for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  2. Heat a tsp of oil in a frying pan. Add in red chili and urad dal.red chili and urad dal for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  3. Fry until dal turns slightly brown. Add in a big pinch of asafoetida and give a quick mix.fried ingredients for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  4. Add in grated sweet potato, and fry for 1 - 2 minutes. You can use either raw sweet potato or fry it for a while.grated sweet potato for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  5. Add in grated coconut, give a quick mix and switch off the stove.grated coconut for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  6. Add in salt, tamarind and jaggery.salt and tamarind for sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  7. Transfer it into a mixie jar.grinding sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  8. Grind it into a smooth paste by adding required water.ground sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
  9. Temper it with oil, red chili, curry leaves, asafoetida and mustard seeds. Serve it with dosa or idli.tempering sweet potato chutney or genasina chutney
