Chana masala or chole masala recipe explained with step by step pictures. This chana masala recipe is very simple and tasty. Chana masala goes well with batura or chapathi or roti. Chana masala or chole masala prepared using white chickpeas, tomato, onion, ginger, garlic and spices.

I am posting this chana masala recipe upon repeated request from our valuable readers. Since our goal is to collect and explain recipes from Indian state of Karnataka, I hardly post other state recipes. And even if I post other state recipes, I will make sure that the taste matches with the one, which is served in Karnataka hotels.

This chana masala is a very tasty curry recipe. It is protein rich and is very healthy. My son loves this curry so much. This is a very simple curry with very minimum ingredients. I prepare this often and he enjoys it with chapathi.

Chana masala recipe

Preparation time: 6 hrs
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup white chickpeas or Kabuli chana or kabul kadle
  2. 1 onion finely chopped
  3. 2 tomatoes finely chopped
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 bay leaf
  6. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste or finely chopped
  7. 1/4 tsp jeera or cumin powder
  8. 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  9. 1/4 tsp garam masala
  10. 1 tsp coriander or dhaniya powder
  11. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  12. 1/4 tsp amchur powder
  13. 1 tbsp kasuri methi or dried methi leaves (optional)
  14. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  15. 1 tbsp butter
  16. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making chana masala or chole masala:

  1. Rinse and soak kabul kadle or white chana for 5 - 6 hours.soaking white chickpeas for chana masala or chole masala
  2. Next take oil in a pressure cooker and heat it. Add in 1/2 tsp jeera and 1 bay leaf.cumin and bay leaf for chana masala or chole masala
  3. When the cumin seed splutters, add in giner+garic paste. Give a quick stir.ginger and garlic for chana masala or chole masala
  4. Next add in chopped onion and fry until soft.onion for chana masala or chole masala
  5. Next add in chopped tomato and fry until soft.tomato for chana masala or chole masala
  6. Add in dry spice powders like red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, amchur powder and garam masala powder. Give a quick mix.spice powders for chana masala or chole masala
  7. Next add in salt and turmeric powder.salt and turmeric powder for chana masala or chole masala
  8. Add in soaked white chickpeas.soaked chickpeas for chana masala or chole masala
  9. Add in 2 cups of water and kasuri methi.water and kasuri methi for chana masala or chole masala
  10. Close the lid and allow it to cook until white chickpeas are soft.cooking chana masala or chole masala
  11. Once chickpeas or chana is cooked, mash some chick peas using back of a spatula.mashing chana for chana masala or chole masala
  12. Boil it again for few minutes.boiling chana masala or chole masala
  13. Switch off the stove and add in batter. Serve it with roti or chapathi or batura.chana masala or chole masala
