Southe gatti or steamed cucumber dumplings

Southe gatti or cucumber steamed dumplings recipe explained with step by step pictures. Southe gatti is prepared using rice, coconut and finely choped or grated cucumber. Southe gatti is nothing but steamed rice and cucumber dumplings. These are generally steamed in banana leaves. This is a no fermentation and instant breakfast recipe.

This recipe is very popular in Mangalore - Udupi region of Karnataka. I have posted many steamed recipes on this website like Pundi gatti or unde kadubu, kayi kadubu, kara kadubu, eeradye (turmeric leaves sweet dumplings), pathrode, nuchinunde, idli, basale pundi, cucumber idli and pumpkin sweet idli recipes. Steamed recipes are very healthy.

I have another version of southekayi kadubu or cucumber idli recipe, which is prepared using cucumber and idli rava. This southe gatti or cucumber dumplings are very tasty and is full of banana leaf flavor. You can serve this with coconut chutney.

Southe gatti or steamed cucumber dumplings recipe

Preparation time: 5 hours
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 cups finely chopped or grated southekayi (sambar cucumber)
  2. 1 cup rice (I used dosa rice) or idli rava
  3. 0.5 - 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  4. Salt as per your taste
  5. Banana leaves

Instructions for making Southe gatti or steamed cucumber dumplings:

  1. Rinse the rice and drain the water completely. Keep it aside for drying (not under the sunlight). You can also use idli rava.rinsed rice for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  2. Now take banana leaves and clean it thoroughly. Next either steam it or hold it on the stove top for few seconds. This is done to avoid breaking of the leaves while folding.banana leaves for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  3. Once the rice is dry, grind it into a powder using mixer grinder. It should be a powder, which is little coarse. Or I would say, it should be in between rava and flour. Transfer it into a container.banana leaves for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  4. Grind the grated coconut into a fine paste using required water. Transfer it into the container, which has rice powder.cucumber for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  5. You have to use sambar cucumber (yellow cucumber), which is green in colour and fresh.cucumber for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  6. Wash and finely chop the cucumber. I usually grate the cucumber. Transfer grated cucumber into the same container, which has rice powder and ground coconut.grated cucumber for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  7. Add in salt and little sugar.rice rava for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  8. Give a quick mix. The batter shall have thick dropping consistency.batter for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
  9. Next place a handfull of batter on one banana leaf.batter on banana leaf for southe gatti or cucumber dumplings

  11. Like this continue and finish making all the packets. Steam it for 20 minutes. Serve it hot with coconut chutney.steam cooking southe gatti or cucumber dumplings
