This doddapathre - ellu (sesame seeds) or ajwain leaf and sesame seeds chutney prepared using doddapatre leaves, ellu (sesame seeds), fried red chili, jaggery, tamarind and coconut. The ellu, sesame seeds and jaggery combination gives an unique taste to this doddapatre chutney. Serve this tasty and healthy chutney with either rice or dosa.

Doddapathre ellu (sesame seeds) chutney

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 120ml)

  1. 15-20 doddapathre leaves / sambar balli leaves
  2. 2 -4 red chilli
  3. 1 tsp ellu / sesame seeds / til
  4. 2 cloves chopped garlic
  5. small marble sized tamarind
  6. 1/2 tsp jaggery
  7. 1 cup grated coconut
  8. Salt as per your taste.

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1/2 tsp urad dal
  4. 2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making doddapathre ellu (sesame seeds) chutney:

  1. Wash, pat dry and chop doddapathre leaves.chopped leaves for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  2. Heat a frying pan. Add in red chilli and sesame seeds. Fry under medium flame.fry chilli and sesame seeds for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  3. Once the sesame seeds are swollen, add in chopped garlic pieces and continue frying.garlic for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  4. Fry until the raw smell of garlic has gone. Then add in chopped doddapathre leaves.fry leaves for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  5. Fry until the leaves are soft. Switch off the stove.fried ingredients for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  6. Wait until the fried ingredients are cool. Grind it with coconut, salt, jaggery and tamarind.grind leaves and dals for doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
  7. Temper it with oil, red chili, mustard seeds and urad dal. Serve it with rice or dosa.tempering the doddapatre or sambarballi chutney
