Akki usli or akki uppittu or recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Akki uppittu or rice upma is a very easy and healthy breakfast item. Akki usli or akki uppittu is prepared by roasting the rice. onion, tomato, mixed vegetables, rasam powder, salt, jaggery and tamarind are other main ingredients.

This akki usli recipe makes use of saarina pudi or rasam powder. You can find 2 rasam powder recipes on this website like udupi rasam powder and mysore rasam powder. I have used 1 tbsp of saarina pudi or rasam powder in this recipe, which you can adjust as per your taste. Also if you don't have rasam powder, then you can add any other powder of your choice. Or you can simple add some garam masala and some chilli powder. You can also adjust the other ingredients like salt, tamarind and jaggery as per your taste.

This akki usli recipe can also be called as akki uppittu. This is one simple ricebath recipe, which has very unique taste. You can find one more simple akki usli or akki uppittu recipe on this website, which is without rasam powder.

Akki usli recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 25 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (Sona masuri)
  2. 3 cups water
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  5. Big pinch asafoetida
  6. 4-5 curry leaves
  7. 1 big onion
  8. 1 medium sized carrot
  9. 7 - 8 beans
  10. 1 small sized potato
  11. 1/4 cup fresh or soaked green peas
  12. Big pinch turmeric powder
  13. 2 tbsp ghee (or oil)
  14. 1 tbsp saarina pudi or rasam powder
  15. 2 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  16. Small lemon sized tamarind
  17. 2 tsp jaggery
  18. Some chopped coriander leaves

Instructions for making akki uppittu or rice upuma:

  1. Chop all the vegetables and keep it ready.
  2. Take rice in a thick bottomed frying pan. Dry roast it until slightly brown.roasting rice for akki usli or akki uppittu
  3. Heat ghee (or oil) in a pressure cooker. Prepare tempering by adding mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Followed by add in asafoetida and few curry leaves.tempering for akki usli or akki uppittu
  4. Next add in chopped onion and saute until soft.onion for akki usli or akki uppittu
  5. Add in mixed vegetables of your choice.vegetables for akki usli or akki uppittu
  6. Fry everything together for a minute.fried vegetables for akki usli or akki uppittu
  7. Then add in roasted and rinsed rice. Give a quick mix.rice for akki usli or akki uppittu
  8. Add in saarina pudi or rasam powder.rasam powder for akki usli or akki uppittu
  9. Also add in 3 cups of water and a big pinch of asafoetida. I have used Sona masuri rice and hence used 3 cups of water. You can add upto 3.5 cups of water as thic recipe can take more water.water and turmeric for akki usli or akki uppittu
  10. Add in salt as per your taste.salt for akki usli or akki uppittu
  11. Add in tamarind juice. Adjust the quantity as per your taste.tamarind juice for akki usli or akki uppittu
  12. Also add in jaggery. Don't skip jaggery but adjust it as per your taste. Mix everything well and bring it to boil.jaggery for akki usli or akki uppittu
  13. Close the lid and cook by making 2 whistles.cooking akki usli or akki uppittu
  14. Open the lid, once the pressure subsides.cooked akki usli or akki uppittu
  15. Mix well, to it with chopped coriander leaves and serve it hot.akki usli or akki uppittu
