Godhi nucchu uppittu or broken wheat upma recipe explained with step by step pictures. Godhi nucchu uppittu is a very easy and healthy breakfast recipe as compared to rave uppittu or rava upma. This godi kadi or godhi nuchu upuma is prepared using broken wheat, onion, tomato and few other spices. Click on this link, if you are looking for no-onion uppittu or upma.

Broken wheat upma recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup broken wheat or godhi nucchu
  2. 2.5 cups water (little more or less depending on the thickness of the broken wheat)
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp bengal gram dal or chana dal
  6. 1 big onion
  7. 1 medium sized tomato
  8. 1-2 green chili
  9. 4-5 curry leaves
  10. 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  11. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  12. 6 - 8 tsp cooking oil
  13. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  14. 2 tsp chopped coriander leaves
  15. 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut

Instructions for making broken wheat upuma:

  2. Chop onion, tomato and ginger. Slit green chilies. Keep all other ingredients handy.onion and tomato for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  3. Heat oil in a big wide frying pan. Add in mustard seeds. When mustard seed splutters add in urad dal and chana dal (gram dal). Keep the stove on medium flame.tempering for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  4. When the dal turns brown add in curry leaves, chopped ginger and slit green chilies.green chili and ginger for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  5. Immediately add in chopped onion and fry until soft.roast broken wheat for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  6. Add in chopped tomato and saute for a while.tomato for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  7. Add in salt and turmeric powder. Fry until tomatoes are soft.salt and turmeric for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  8. Add in 2 cups of water. The amount of water may vary slightly depending on the thickness of broken wheat.water for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  9. Wait until the water comes to rolling boil.boiling water for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  10. Then add in the broken wheat. Give a quick mix. After a minute close the lid and cook under low flame.broken wheat for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  11. Stir occasionally and continue to cook under low flame until the water is almost dry. Cook by closing the lid.cooking godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
  12. Add in grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well, close the lid and cook for 2 - 3 minutes more under low flame. Switch off the stove and serve.coconut and coriander leaves for godhi kadi uppittu or broken wheat upma
