Akki uppittu or rice upuma recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Akki uppittu or rice upma is a very healthy and easy breakfast recipe. This is a vegetable rice upma. Like any other vegetable uppittu or upuma, rice upma is prepared using rice, onion, tomato, vegetables, ginger, green chili and few other spices.

You can call this upma or uppittu as ricebath as well. Because it is prepared like rice bath but the recipe is similar to vegetable uppittu or upma recipe. I would say this is a alternate for rave uppittu or rava upma haters. Since it is prepared using rice and is pressure cooked, it tastes different than regular rava upma.

Akki uppittu recipe

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup rice (Sona masuri)
  2. 2.5 cups water
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tsp urad dal
  5. 1 tsp bengal gram dal or chana dal
  6. 1 big onion
  7. 1 medium sized tomato
  8. 1-2 green chili
  9. 4-5 curry leaves
  10. 1 tsp finely chopped ginger
  11. 1/2 medium sized carrot (optional)
  12. 4 - 5 beans (optional)
  13. 2 tbsp fresh or soaked green peas (optional)
  14. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  15. 6 - 8 tsp cooking oil
  16. 1 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  17. 2 tsp chopped coriander leaves
  18. 1/4 cup fresh grated coconut
  19. 2 tsp lemon juice

Instructions for making akki uppittu or rice upuma:

  1. Rinse the rice and keep it aside. Chop onion, tomato, ginger and other vegetables. Slit green chilies. Keep all other ingredients handy.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add in mustard seeds. When mustard seed splutters add in urad dal and chana dal (gram dal). Keep the stove on medium flame.tempering for akki uppittu or rice upma
  3. When the dal turns brown add in curry leaves, chopped ginger and slit green chilies.green chili and ginger for akki uppittu or rice upma
  4. Immediately add in chopped onion and fry until soft.chopped onion for akki uppittu or rice upma
  5. Immediately add in green peas and vegetables. Please note I didn't add any vegetables. Saute for few minutes.vegetables for akki uppittu or rice upma
  6. Next add in chopped tomato. Saute for a while.tomato for akki uppittu or rice upma
  7. Add in turmeric powder. Fry for few minutes.turmeric for akki uppittu or rice upma
  8. Then add in rinsed rice. fry for a minute under low flame.rice for akki uppittu or rice upma
  9. Add in 2.5 cups of water. Also add in salt and give a quick mix.water and salt for akki uppittu or rice upma
  10. Close the lid and cook the upittu or upma by making 2 whistles.cooking akki uppittu or rice upma
  11. Open the lid, once the pressure subsides.cooked akki uppittu or rice upma
  12. Add in grated coconut, chopped coriander leaves and 2 tsp of lemon juice. Mix well and serve hot with curd and pickle.coconut and coriander leaves for akki uppittu or rice upma
  13. Mix well and serve hot with curd and coconut chutney.akki uppittu or rice upma in pressure cooker
