Mandakki usli or puffed rice oggarane recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Mandakki oggarane or mandakki susla is a very simple and healthy breakfast recipe. Mandakki usli or mandakki oggarane is prepared using thick puffed rice, roasted gram, onion, tomato, green chilli, peanuts and few other spices. This is a tasty north Karnataka recipe.

I learnt this recipe from my maid, here in Pune. I have used tomato in this recipe, which is optional and you can skip it. Also I have used roasted gram flour or hurigadale (putani) hittu in this recipe, which is very important and don't skip it.

This is a very easy but tasty recipe. You can prepare this mandakki oggarane or mandakki susla in just 15 - 20 minutes. You can prepare this either for breakfast or as evening snacks. I have used 8 cups of mandakki or puffed rice, which is little less than 200gm. Do try this and enjoy the simplicity of cooking.

Mandakki oggarane recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 3

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 8 cups or 200gm puffed rice or mandakki
  2. 1/4 cup roasted gram or hurigadale
  3. 1/4 cup ground nut or peanuts or shenga
  4. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  5. 1 large onion
  6. 1 small tomato
  7. 1-2 green chili
  8. 4-5 curry leaves
  9. 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  10. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  11. Salt as per your taste
  12. Sugar as per your taste
  13. 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  14. Lemon juice as per your taste

Instructions for making mandakki usli or oggarane:

  1. Take 1/2 cup of roasted gram in a mixie jar.roasted gram for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  2. Grind it into a fine powder and keep it aside.roasted gram powder for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  3. Take 8 cup of puffed rice in a container.puffed rice or poha for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  4. Add enough water and soak it for 2 minutes.soak puffed rice or poha for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  5. After 2 minutes, squeeze the water and take it out.soaked puffed rice or poha for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  6. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Add in ground nuts or peanuts. Fry until peanut starts crackling.peanuts for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  7. Next add in mustard seeds. And finely chopped green chillies. Adjust the green chillies as per your spice level.mustard seeds and green chillies for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  8. Also add in curry leaves and finely chopped onion. Fry everything together until onions turn soft under low medium flame.onion and curry leaves for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  9. Add in chopped tomato, turmeric powder and fry until tomatoes are soft.tomato for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  10. Add in salt as per your taste and give a quick mix. Please remember that some variety of puffed rice do contain salt in them.salt for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  11. Add in little sugar and give a quick mix. Please note that adding sugar is optional.sugar for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  12. Next add in soaked puffed rice.soaked puffed rice for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  13. Top it with coriander leaves.coriander leaves for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  14. Also add in roasted gram powder from step 2.roasted gram powder for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  15. At the end, add in lemon juice as per your taste.lemon juice for mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
  16. Switch off the stove and give a quick mix. Serve it as breakfast or evening snacks and enjoy.mandakki usli or oggarane or susla recipe
