Dali toy recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Dali toy is a very easy and tasty Konkani style dal or tove is prepared with very minimum ingredients. Dali toy is prepared using toor dal, green chilli, asafoetida and tempering. This tasty dal rasam tastes good with rice.

This is a very simple dal tove. Neither tamarind nor tomato is added. But some people will add little tomato along with the green chilli. Lemon juice at the end is optional, however lemon juice is not there in the original recipe. Even the coriander leaves are not added in the original recipe. Apart from all these, no spice powders, no coconut....so it is totally simple. But believe me it is very tasty.

Generally dali toy or dal rasam or dal tove is served with hot steaming rice. However you can reduce the amount of water and serve it with chapati or serve it like soup.

Dali toy recipe

Preparation time: 5 mins
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves: 4

Main Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup toor dal or togaribele
  2. Big pinch of turmeric powder
  3. 1/4 tsp cooking oil
  4. 1 - 2 green chillies
  5. 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  6. Around 2 cups of water
  7. Salt as per your taste

Ingredients for tempering:

  1. 1 red chilli
  2. 5 - 6 curry leaves
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tbsp coconut oil or any cooking oil

Instructions for making dali toy:

  1. Take 1/2 cup of toor dal in a pressure cooker.toor dal for dali toy recipe
  2. Rinse it well.rinsing dal for dali toy recipe
  3. Add in turmeric, oil and a cup of water. Close the lid and cook by making 2 whistles. Dal will get cooked fast by adding turmeric and oil. Also it will not spill over easily.turmeric and oil for dali toy recipe
  4. Next add in slit green chillies and continue cooking by making one more whistle. You can use open pot method as well. Make sure the dal is cooked until soft.green chillies for dali toy recipe
  5. Take a whisk or masher and mash the dal well.mash dal for dali toy recipe
  6. Add one more cup of water. You can adjust the consistency as per your choice.water for dali toy recipe
  7. Add in salt as per your taste and bring it to boil.salt for dali toy recipe
  8. Add in asafoetida when it starts o boil. Continue boiling.asafoetida for dali toy recipe
  9. Bring it to rolling boil and switch off the stove.boiling dali toy recipe
  10. Temeper it with oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chili. Serve it with hot rice or chapati or as a soup.tempering for dali toy recipe
