Instant poha idli or avalakki idli will be very soft. You can serve these instant soft idlis with coconut chutney or sambar.

I usually don't prefer instant recipes. But one day, my Son started demanding for idlis in the evening. I was not having the idli batter in stock, but at the same time I didn't want to disappoint him. So I prepared these instant idlis along with idli sambar. The idlis came out very soft. We all enjoyed the idlis.

Instant poha idli or avalakki idli

Preparation time: 15 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 12 idlis

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup avalakki or poha or beaten rice
  2. 1 cup curd (slightly sour)
  3. 3/4 cup idli rava (use 1/2 cup for super soft idlis)
  4. A pinch of baking soda (optional)
  5. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making instant poha idli or avalakki idli:

  1. Take avalakki or thin poha or beaten rice in a container. You can use medium avalakki too.beaten rice for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  2. Next add in 1 cup of curd and give a good mix.curd for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  3. Rest it for 5 minutes or until the beaten rice is soaked.soak beaten rice for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  4. Then transfer it into a mixie jar and grind it until fine and fluffy by adding very little water.grinding curd and beaten rice for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  5. Transfer it into the container and add in idli rava. Give a quick mix. You can reduce the rava quantity to 1/2 cup if you want super soft idlis.idli rava for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  6. Add in required water and prepare idli batter having thick dropping consistency. Don't make the batter thin, to avoid flat idlis.batter for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  7. Add in salt and a pinch of baking soda. Mix it well. Adding soda is optional and you can avoid it by resting the batter for 10 - 15 minutes.salt and soda for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  8. Grease the idli plates with oil or ghee and drop the batter to the idli moulds.pour the batter in idli moulds for instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  9. Steam it for 10 - 12 minutes. Place the idli plates only after the steam starts. Do not over cook the idlis.cooking instant poha idli or avalakki idli
  10. Wait for 2 minutes then take out the idlis. Serve it with spicy coconut chutney or idli sambar.cooking instant poha idli or avalakki idli
