Avarekalu usli or avarekalu sundal recipe explained with step by step pictures. Avarekalu usli is a tasty and healthy snacks prepared using hyacinth beans or field benas. You can serve this usli or sundal like snacks along with a cup of tea.

This is avarekalu or field beans season. So I have decided to post few avarekalu recipes. I have already posted avarekalu saru and avarekalu mixture recipes. And soon I will be posting avare kalu upma and avarekalu rotti recipes.

Avarekalu usli recipe

Preparation time: 30 min
Cooking time: 15 min
Serves: 2

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 cup avarekalu or hyacinth beans or field beans
  2. 2 tsp oil
  3. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 tsp urad dal
  6. 1 tsp gram dal or chana dal
  7. A big pinch of turmeric powder
  8. A big pinch of hing or asafoetida
  9. 1 - 2 green chili
  10. 4 - 5 curry leaves
  11. 1 onion finely chopped
  12. 1/4 - 1/2 cup grated coconut
  13. 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
  14. 1 tsp lemon juice (optional)
  15. Salt as per your taste

Instructions for making avarekalu usli:

  1. Cook avarekalu until soft using a pressure cooker. Add in salt and required water while cooking and cook by making 3 - 4 whistles. Once they are cooked drain the excess water and keep it ready.
  2. Take a frying pan and prepare tempering using oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, gram dal and urad dal. , red chili, curry leaves, turmeric powder and asafoetida.tempering for avarekalu usli or avrekalu sundal
  3. Add in green chili, curry leaves, turmeric powder and asafoetida.green chili and curry leaves for avarekalu usli or avrekalu sundal
  4. Add in finely chopped onion and fry until soft.onion for avarekalu usli or avrekalu sundal
  5. Now add in cooked avarekalu or avrekalu. Also add in salt and mix well and switch off the stove.onion for avarekalu usli or avrekalu sundal
  6. Now sprnkle grated coconut and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well and switch off the stove. Optionally you can also add lemon juice. Serve it with tea and enjoy.onion for avarekalu usli or avrekalu sundal
