Bele tovve or thove recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. This is a very easy and very tasty recipe using togari bele or toor dal. This is a very tasty side dish for chapati or rice. This thovve or dal fry prepared using toor dal, tomato, ginger, green chilli, red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida.

This is a perfect recipe when you are running out of vegetables. Nevertheless it is very healthy, tasty and easy to prepare. Kids will enjoy this simple yet tasty dal. This is a no onion and no garlic dal or bele tovve recipe. I have used pure hing (asafoetida) in this recipe from "Naati grains", which enhances the taste further.

Bele tovve recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 20 min
Serves: 2 cup

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1/2 cup toor dal
  2. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  3. 1 red chilli
  4. 7 - 8 curry leaves
  5. 1 - 2 green chillies
  6. 1 tsp chopped ginger
  7. 1 tomato chopped
  8. 1/4 tsp turmeric
  9. Big pinch of asafoetida
  10. 2 tsp salt (or as per your taste)
  11. 1 tbsp cooking oil
  12. 1 tbsp coriander leaves

Instructions for making bele tovve:

  1. Rinse toor dal.toor dal for bele tovve or thove recipe
  2. Add in a cup of water, few drops of oil and big pinch of turmeric.cooking dal for bele tovve or thove recipe
  3. Cook until soft by making 3 - 4 whistles.cooked dal and chilli for bele tovve or thove recipe
  4. Heat a tbsp of oil. Prepare tempering with mustard seeds and red chillies.tempering for bele tovve or thove recipe
  5. Next add in chopped green chillies, ginger and some curry leaves.green chillies, ginger and curry leaves for bele tovve or thove recipe
  6. Also add in turmeric powder and asafoetida (hing).turmeric powder and asafoetida for bele tovve or thove recipe
  7. Followed by add in chopped tomato.tomato for bele tovve or thove recipe
  8. Fry until tomatoes are soft.fried tomato for bele tovve or thove recipe
  9. Add in cooked dal and required water.cooked dal and water for bele tovve or thove recipe
  10. Add in salt as per taste.salt for bele tovve or thove recipe
  11. Bring it to boil and ssprinkle corinder leaves. Switch off the stove. Serve it with hot steaming rice or chapati.coriander leaves for bele tovve or thove recipe
