Tomato thambli or tomato riata recipe explained with step by step pictures and a video. Tomato thambli is a very easy and tasty sidedish for rice or idli or dosa. It can be prepared in just 5 minutes. Tomato thambli or tambli is prepared using tomato, curd, coconut, green chili, cumin and mustard.

As I have mentioned in my earlier posts, sasive and thambli are curd or yoghurt based gravy recipes. Sasive is a small side dish in a multi coarse meal. Sasive is generally prepared by grinding coconut, chili and mustard.

Tomato tambuli recipe

Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 5 min
Serves: 4

Ingredients: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 2 large sized tomatoes
  2. 1 - 2 green chilies
  3. 1/4 cup grated coconut
  4. 1/2 cup curd
  5. Some coriander leaves
  6. 1 tsp salt or as per your taste.
  7. 1 tsp ghee or oil

Ingredients for tempering: (measuring cup used = 240ml)

  1. 1 red chili
  2. 1 tsp cooking oil
  3. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

Instructions for making tomato tambuli:

  1. Heat ghee or oil in a pan. And add in roughly chopped green chilli. You can replace it with red chilli too.ghee and green chilli for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  2. Also add in roughly chopped tomatoes.tomato for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  3. Fry until tomatoes are soft. Frying for 2 minutes will do the job.curd for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  4. Take roasted ingredients in a mixie jar.roasted green chilli and tomato for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  5. Add in grated coconut. Grind it until smooth by adding required water.coconut for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  6. Transfer ground paste into the bowl. Add in salt as per your taste.ground paste for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  7. Also add in 1/2 cup whisked curd (or buttermilk) and give a quick mix.curd for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  8. Temper it with oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red chili.tempering tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
  9. Garnish it with finely chopped coriander leaves. Serve it with hot steaming rice or dosa or idli.coriander leaves for tomato tambuli or tomato tambli
